Life is a journey. I am Larry Blackwell’s, my role as a therapist is to help adults, couples, parents, teens and children live their own authentic journeys and achieve their own best self whatever that is for them. I emphasize creating a non-judgmental environment where clients from all backgrounds can safely work to overcome the emotional experiences holding them back from reaching their full potential. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and an Advanced Alcohol And Drug Counselor with over 25 years experience in the mental health field, I hold sacred the trust my clients invest in me when they share their stories and vulnerabilities.
While I use approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy and Family Systems Therapy, I integrate all my therapy with a Solution Focused Brief Treatment approach. Whether I’m doing individual, couples or family counseling, I help my clients remember when things were better for them. By doing this we are able to identify the skills that clients already posses and then we build on these skills to help clients create the life, relationship and/or family they want to have. When working with individuals on career counseling, I work with the individual to help them explore career choices and potential career changes while ensuring that their career decisions fit with their life goals.
I also offer coaching services for the parents of teenagers. Parenting a teenager is very different than parenting a pre-teen. Helping parents understand how to effectively communicate with their teen to better manage parent/teen conflict and minimize risky teen behavior such as substance use and risky teen driving while also helping parents learn to set appropriate boundaries with their teens is something I have specialized in for over 26 years.
Larry Blackwell earned an MSW from the University of Connecticut School of Social Work. In addition to his work in private practice, Larry administers individual, group and family psychotherapy and oversees the clinical supervision of an acute adolescent psychiatric unit at the Albert J. Solnit Children’s Center, South Campus. Larry is an expert in working with families to mend and strengthen their relationships.
Larry is certified as an Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor and works with both adolescents and adults with substance abuse issues. Larry is also certified in Acudetox which utilizes ear acupuncture to minimize cravings in substance abuse treatment. Acudetox has also shown promising results in helping to reduce stress and anxiety.
